Desert or not

For those who think if it’s a desert it must be hot, or at least warm in the winter, I’d like to note that at Casa NewMexiKen at noon today, with the sun shining so brightly I’m wearing sunglasses indoors, it was 25°F.

It got down to 15°F this morning officially.

In Tucson it dropped to 20°F early today, a record (for the date).

  1. I didn’t realize that it was actually that cold and set out to wash the salt off my vehicle today. I almost killed myself doing it because of all of the ice around the perimeters of the self-serve car wash. Once I was done I thought, “Great. Is it going to freeze or dry?” Lawdy!
I have a house in Tucson and it is going on the market today. I’m crossing my fingers that all of the outdoor pipes are okay. As in most houses in Tucson, the washing machine is outside on the back porch. Ut oh!
The last time I remember it getting that cold in Tucson was back in 1999 and there was a cold snap that, to this desert rat, felt like Siberia. I think it was around 26 degrees. Now that I’ve weathered the weather in Chicago (and have seemingly brought it with me to the southwest) it seems like nothing. I think the guy at the car wash today thought I was nuts but, hey, that’s what you do in the midwest because of all of the salt. I think I washed my vehicle more in the winter than I ever did in the summer!
The kids are home from school and are buggy, buggy, buggy. Why? Well, they are kids AND the sun is shining and it looks beautiful outside… until you step out into it and the cold hits your cheeks making them instant-rosey.
I’m not complaining… I’m very glad that ice storm missed us and the hoarfrost has moved on to Canada… where it belongs!
    Stay warm!
    🙂
