I like how we always did it…. The adults opened on Christmas Eve and the children got Christmas morning all to themselves. That way, the adults could be “grown-up” about it and take turns and give each individual gift some attention without the children going nuts waiting. Then, in the morning, the children could break loose with their gifts and the adults could watch on groggily. Of course, the kids always got to open one gift before bed on Christmas Eve. I can still remember the wonderful anticipation of examining each gift, trying to figure out what might be inside, and choosing just the one to open that would (hopefully) be most special and excitiing. (I did get burned once on that one when the gift I chose was a Girl Sout uniform–not at all what I was hoping for.) I also remember the feeling of having accomplished an adult rite of passage once I was allowed to join the adults for opening gifts on Christmas Eve, instead of waiting for morning as the children had to do. It was a marvelous tradition.
I prefer Xmas Eve because exchanging gifts then opens up Xmas Day for other pursuits, like skiing. But now that I have a five year old, we go down to her grandmother’s house in the suburbs for presents on Xmas Eve with the family, then have Santa and nuclear family gifts at home the next morning.
