The estimated resident population of the United States reached 300 million about 5:45 this morning (Mountain Time).
The population has doubled in 57 years (1949).
Doubling again, it would be 600 million in 2063.

57 years ago there were only 150 million Americans reproducing (and/or imigrating) and now there are 300 million of them doing it. So, wouldn’t there be some sort of geometric progression speeding up to the next plateau of doubling in considerably less than 57 years?
But the next doubling adds 300 million, not just 150 million — there’s your progression. By the way, there’s the rule of 69 (for continuously compunding functions like population growth): divide 69 by the percent growth in a given time period and get the doubling time in time periods. So a 3% yearly growth rate yields a doubling time of 13 years.
That’s 23 years, not 13.
