Farr Feed had this great photo of the season’s first evidence of snow — this from Taos, so I’m thinking that is New Mexico’s highest point, Wheeler Peak, 13,161 feet (4,011 m).

A true test to see if someone is a genuine New Mexican — they pronounce Taos with only one syllable.
[Just as genuine southern Californians know that Tijuana is three syllables, not four.]
You know, I’m not a Californian, but the four-syllable Tijuana is one of my Top Five Pet Peeves. I go just the tiniest bit insane every single time someone pronounces it tee-UH-WAH-nuh in my presence. Errrgh.
But I pronouce Taos with one syllable, and I’m a transplant to New Mexico. A recent one at that.
Maybe it has to do with whether or not one grows up in a culturally diverse environment? Maybe always hearing many different languages spoken when one is little makes a bigger difference than we think.
