The Year of Magical Thinking

NewMexiKen recommends Joan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking without reservation. Every thinking person should read this book about the sudden death of Didion’s husband and the serious illness of their adult daughter (who died after the book was published). While, of course, sad, the book is not depressing, and it is about the best discussion of death and dying — and grief — that one can imagine.

  1. What a popular book! I’m number 451 out of 451 on the hold list at the Multnomah County Library for “The Year of Magical Thinking.

Of course there are 79 copies. Still, it’s likely to be a couple months before my name comes up, but that’s ok because I have a stack of books to get through in the meantime.

  2. On your recommendation I raced down to Borders and spent 18 something for this book.

Having just spent nearly 10 months in intensive bereavement consuling I think I know something about grief.

the book seems to be a hodgepodge of repetition.

I certainly don’t suggest anyone waste money on it.
