I always thought Elizabeth II became queen the same month I was born (Feb. 1952). Since NewMexiKen is always more than trustworthy with his dates, I was curious about the discrepancy, so I looked it up. Indeed, Elizabeth was proclaimed queen on 2/8/52 at the age of 25. (It was 2 days after her father, King George VI, died in his sleep at the age of 56). However, she wasn’t crowned until 6/2/53, as correctly reported by NMK. (There’s a distinction between the accession and the coronation, thus my confusion.) She is now one of the longest reigning monarchs in British history ranked at #7–there have only ever been 10 besides her who reigned for 50 years or more. (The average reign is 15 years, which is how long her father ruled.) I’m sure all you anglophiles out there were just dying to know all that trivia.
