Workin’ 9 to 5

A Canadian province will shut its 24-hour suicide hotline and replace it with one that operates only during business hours.

Prince Edward Island, a small province on Canada’s East Coast, says it is too expensive to operate the hotline around the clock. Starting June 1, it will be open only between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

  1. I can see only funding one shift per day, if that’s all they can afford, but it seems that far more people would be feeling suicidal and in need of help during the late night and early morning hours–say 7 pm to 3 am or something–when there’s no one else to call. There are lots of places to get help during the day. How odd. Maybe it’s different on Prince Edward Island.
