I thought to myself, “That seems incredibly high!” Then, I realized I had talked to both of my parents today and it wasn’t even 2:00. Hmmm . . . It still seems very high to me.
I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of those calls were to borrow money. Just kidding, but these days a lot more young people are having a harder time making ends meet than in recent [previous] generations. I read an article last month that talked about how Baby Boomers are having a hard time letting go of their kids. I thought: Letting go? We can’t get rid of them! (For the record, mine have left the nest, hopefully permanently.) But with jobs so tight and wages so low due to out-sourcing and a struggling economy, more young adults are living at home than have done so for many decades. Maybe that’s the reason they talk to their parents every day. They live with them.
Of course, Harper’s doesn’t say whether the parents are listening.
