  1. From what I’ve seen, the basic rule here in NoVa is one day of school cancelled for every inch of snow that falls.

  2. On the other hand, Chicago is the only place I have ever lived where the schools close to celebrate Casimir Pulaski’s birthday (March 2nd).

It is only because of that holiday that I know who Casimir Pulaski was.

  3. I got a good grounding in Pulaski for a couple of reasons:

early in life – one of the handiest tools the forest service ever invented has the same name

later in Savannah – they have a lovely statue to the one referred to here

  4. DC schools opened two hours late today. Many students had to walk to school in the street as there was not time or resources to clear and de-ice the sidewalks. Now, the fancy school his daughters attend did cancel classes today. This is because some students travel rather great distances to attend that school. Some students (and faculty) will probably travel up to 40-50 miles each way to attend class. Weather and thus road conditions and traffic in the outlying areas was considerably worse than what was seen locally.

We are all suitably impressed by President Obama’s bravado in the face of winter weather and I am quite sure he will whip us all into shape, but I would prefer he focus on something else and let his kids enjoy the day off.

I certainly hope that the next time the DC schools superintendent makes a decision on school closings, that he is not affected by Obamas desire to inject “flinty, Chicago toughness” (http://www.wtopnews.com/index.php?nid=25&sid=1585670_) into our decision making process. Capabilities, resources, and experience in dealing with winter weather is not on the same level as Chicago.

Lastly, Kościuszko trumps Pulaski cause the media presentation at his NPS site is better than Pulaski’s.

  5. Last January it snowed here in Tucson. Granted it was all melted and gone by noon, and at it’s deepest, a term I use VERY LOOSELY, it was maybe 1/2 an inch. And you guess it….schools were closed. I believe it was because absolutely NO ONE could concentrate. For crying out loud there was snow! They couldn’t possibly expect any more from us.
