Figs
So bring us some figgy pudding
That’s a line from “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” I know, I just heard it.
My question is, when was the last time you had a fig, let alone any figgy pudding?

Here in SoCal we can buy fresh figs about two weeks a year. The mission figs, which most people have never seen/heard of, are sweeter than a candy bar when perfect. Perfect lasts about one day.

Oddly enough, it actually hasn’t been that long since I’ve had figgy (Christmas) pudding. Tastes kind of like fruitcake, but I like it warm with whiskey sauce.

We found a ragged little fig tree at a local nursery this past late summer. It was marked down considerably, considering it was a large pot, originally listed at more than $100. But it still had a few leaves, and a few figs, with a story that it had stood for years crowded among more aggressive plants in a warehouse. It was marked down to $20. We bought it, took it home, and planted it on the east side of the house. I ate a few of the ripe figs, and knocked the remaining unripe ones off the branches to stimulate the roots (I hope). We’ll see how it does when springtime comes around.
